Alexandra Frederick was born and raised on Vancouver Island and spent most of her childhood on a farm in Mill Bay surrounded by rolling fields, beautiful gardens and nature in abundance.
The natural world has been a most persistent influence on her artwork in all forms, from Claywork and Painting to Fashion and Garden Design. Growing up as the daughter of an archeologist and a biologist provided her with a wonderful library of fascinating and beautiful pictures and from early on her parents’ influence has helped train her eye towards the natural world, to notice what is often missed or overlooked.
When she found the medium of clay she immediately fell in love with it and the possibilities it opened up. The tactile process of molding and shaping such a receptive substance entralled her and gave her a way to express her creative impressions of the world around her. The ability to take something raw and turn it into something beautiful with the addition of her imagination still thrills her.
