SILVER & LAPIS DRAGONFLY EARRINGS

As a child, Stuart was always drawing, deriving inspiration from the natural world around him. His ability to draw the world around him led Stuart into a career as an illustrator. He also co-owned an art gallery for a few years. In the early 90’s he apprenticed with master First Nations silver engraver Harold Alfred.
SILVER CHICKADEE & TIGERS EYE PENDANT
In 1997, Stuart was inspired to produce a line of jewellery that carves realistic lines onto silver. Wren Silverworks jewellery celebrates of the beauty and strength of nature and our connection to it.
SILVER CUFF BRACELET WITH ORCA DESIGN
Stuart also continues to draw and paint. He lives, surrounded by wildlife, on the outskirts of Victoria, B.C.
TINY WREN SILVER EARRINGS
Wren Silverworks jewellery is individually engraved, each line separately carved, and each open area cut out with a jewellers saw. Every piece is handmade – an individual piece of art. On the back there is a sterling stamp, and the artist’s signature.
SILVER WREN WITH TURQUOISE PENDANT
The first step is to create a detailed line drawing of a plant or animal. Then, the drawing is transferred onto a flat sheet of sterling silver. 22-gauge silver is used for earrings and brooches and 16 or 18-gauge silver is used for bracelets.
SILVER HUMMINGBIRD BROOCH
Next, the silver is engraved along the design lines, each line individually carved with a variety of gravers (very sharp chisel points). Using a tiny saw, the silver is cut out, following the periphery of the design as well as cutting out any pieces from inside the design (piercing). The edges are filed to a smooth finish. The piece is shaped: this involves using a hammer to bang the silver from the back into a pre-carved shaping “holes”, giving the flat silver gentle curves. If needed, any findings are soldered on, and it is then polished with a buffing wheel and tripoli (clay) compound. The silver is then washed in an ultrasonic washer, dried, polished with rouge (a finer clay) and washed again.
SILVER & AMBER DRAGONFLY PENDANT
All earring hooks and studs, and brooch pins are sterling silver. Chains are also sterling silver. Brooch backs have a locking clasp. Brooches and earrings are made in 22 gauge silver, and braceletsin 16 gauge and 18 gauge.

Jewellery Inspired by a ‘Rockhound’.

August 21st, 2009 | No Comments

Leona Smith wrote, “I began creating jewelry in the 1990′s. My inspiration comes from my grandfather, who was a rock hound – he would seek out interesting rocks and later fashion his finds into jewelry.ls_n31                                         As a young girl, I was awed by the stones and the meanings that flow from a piece of handcrafted jewelry.
Recently I discovered silverprecious metal clay and silver wire work, and was inspired all over again to create artisan pieces.

My “gems” are created out of silver precious metal clay and sterling silver wire with beads and / or other wire as accents.ls_e02Each component is crafted by hand, i.e. every link, jump ring, clasp and ear wire is hand made in my studio. The precious metal clay comes in a clay form and is shaped, dried, sanded and fired in a kiln, becoming a piece in .999 silver. After firing, the pieces are polished. Each piece is unique.
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver (at least 92.5%) and other metals, primarily copper. The copper reacts to moisture and sulphur in the air, creating tarnish. Precious metal is clay is fine silver (99.9% silver); it tarnishes slower than sterling. Note that some pieces are blackened deliberately as part of the design.ls_e56
Follow these tips to keep your silver bright:
Silver jewelry can be immersed in water for cleaning if there are no soft gemstones, pearls, crystals or silk thread in the piece.
- Wash with diluted mild dishwashing liquid. Rinse thoroughly. Dry with cotton. Lay flat to air dry overnight. Wrap in jewelers’ anti-tarnish tissue. Store in its own airtight plastic bag. ls_e59
- Same advice as with all other jewelry: avoid getting any chemicals, including perfume, hairspray, deodorant spray, body lotion, acetone, bleach, or turpentine, onto your silver jewelry.
- Store your silver jewelry carefully so it needs less cleaning and doesn’t get scratched.
- Wear your silver jewelry often! The color of silver becomes richer and more beautiful the more it\’s worn.ls_b64

Jennifer Miller is the owner and designer of Uniacke Designs.

As seen on Good Morning America & worn by      Hoda!

She is a direct descendant of James Boyle Uniacke, the first Premier of Nova Scotia, Canada, during the 19th Century – hence the name Uniacke Designs. The name Uniacke dates back to the Strongbow Invasion of Ireland during the 11th Century. Originally the name was “Unicus Est” meaning “the only one.” Over time the name changed to Uniacke.
BLUE QUARTZ & SILVER NECKLACE
Jennifer has always lived in Victoria. She has always had a strong love of animals, particularly horses. Since about the age of ten she has trained and very successfully shown horses, both her own and other peoples’. Jennifer’s sharp attention to the many complex details involved with successfully showing horses has enabled her to focus her creative energy into designing jewellery -her other passion.
STERLING SILVER WITH LAPIS & CARNELIAN PENDANT
Her inspirations for the colour in her designs are drawn from current fashion trends and the unique and natural landscape that she is surrounded by in the lovely “city of gardens”, Victoria, British Columbia.
TURQUOISE AND SILVER NECKLACE

To create the unique pieces, Jennifer uses a combination of colours, shapes and textures, utilizing precious metals, either sterling silver or gold, semi-precious gems and stones, freshwater pearls and other natural materials. Each piece of jewellery, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, is made by the designer herself using proven techniques to further enhance the jewellery that she makes. Jennifer’s goal is to continue designing and creating beautiful and unique jewellery for women who love to express their own individual sense of fashion, personality and character.
WOOD & AGATE SILVER PENDANT
In April 2010 Jennifer’s work was shown on Good Morning America. Hoda was wearing one of Jennifer’s magnificent bracelets and speaking to Kathie Lee about the superb jewellery.

CHILDHOOD RE-VISITED BY HONICA

November 25th, 2012 | No Comments

Honica writes

“Playing with fire, and placing pennies on the railway tracks…., these are things I actually did not do in my childhood, but I have indulged in these youthful pastimes many times since I became a jewellery designer.
CHILDHOOD REVISITED EARRINGS
Playing the soft flame of the torch over brass shapes and copper pennies brings a rainbow of colours to the surface. And of course, the train do a wonderful job of reforming pennies into soft curved irregular shapes.
CHILDHOOD REVISITED EARRINGS

While the genesis of this collection was a playful exercise of seeing materials in a new way, more traditional metal working techniques such as roller-printing, hammer forging, and engraving gave depth and value to each design.
CHILDHOOD REVISITED EARRINGS
Adding a carefully chose palette of many different beads, which highlight and enrich the metalwork, this jewellery reminds me daily that “all work and no play”….well, you know the rest”.

14 Reasons to Buy Locally this Christmas | Side Street Studio Blog

14 Reasons to Buy Locally this Christmas | Side Street Studio Blog

14 Reasons Why you should buy Locally made Canadian Arts & Crafts this Christmas Season.

November 20th, 2012 | No Comments

14 Reasons to Buy Locally this Christmas

  1. The B.C.  Finance Minister Mike de Jong recently announced an unexpected revenue loss of $1.4 billion over the next three years for B.C. finances! How can such a breathtakingly large number be described as ‘unexpected’? This huge sum will have a major impact on Government spending for employment, schools, hospitals and other Government services for many years to come.

  2. Unemployment in B.C. is currently running at 6.7% according to Statistics Canada– but a more accurate number should be 8.8% if people are included who have just ‘given up’ looking for work.
    MEDIUM CASSEROLE
  3. Instead of buying goods made in some far off country (often for low wages) we need to support local Canadian made goods and services.
    COPPER & STERLING SILVER NECKLACE
  4. Shopping at Wal Mart, the big box stores and shopping Malls often does very little for our local economy. Much of the goods sold in these places are imported and sometimes made with low cost labour.
    SILVER MAPLE BURL SALAD BOWL
  5. Locally crafted work is unique! Unlike items made in a far off factory; local crafts people make work that is individual and one-of-a-kind. This does not just apply to a magnificent vase or a glass bowl. Even with a humble coffee mug, every piece has a very slight difference. When just one person or a husband & wife team makes an item the numbers are by the nature of the process – small. It’s great to have or give as a gift something that is genuinely unique and locally made.
    RAKU BARNACLE POT #25

  6. Local artist produce work of excellent quality and always take a personal pride in their hand-made work. I have yet to meet an artist who was not passionate about their work. From potters to glass artists to textile makers – this is their life and they are justly proud of their work. If treated well much of this work can last a lifetime.  How many things can you say that about in our society today? How many of those ‘bargain’ mass produced items last more than a few years.
    PADRAIG LADIES WOOL SLIPPERS

  7. Save money! Contrary to what some people believe, buying directly from the artist or their local Studio can most often cost less than buying some mass produced item from a department store. Reduced transportation costs, no middle men and low advertising helps to keep costs down.
    SKY BLUE FUSED "HANKIE" BOWL

  8. Local artists do really care about customer service! The Artists are available to repair, alter, clean or replace your purchase if you should ever need this service. They are genuinely interested to help if there is ever a problem. You never, ever need to speak with some remote Customer Service person.
    FULL MOON EYES

  9. Personal service is greatly important to local artists.  Many artists will custom make work to your specification. If you need a gift for a special occasion then very often the artist will be happy to make to your requirements.
    BEER STEIN

  10. Most ranges are always available so that you can add to your range or just collect individual pieces over time.  Not just for pottery but jewellery or even glass art as well.
    HUMMINGBIRD SILK SCARF

  11. Shopping locally helps your local economy,by supporting local artists it keeps money in the community and ensures that hard learned skills are alive for future generations.
    GLORIANA BRACELET

  12. Help your local environment!  Local arts & crafts produce a minimal carbon footprint – little transportation is involved. Conservation is important to all of us. Much of what local artists use is recycled – including what little packaging is ever used! It you ever think of supporting a Green movement then the local Arts & Crafts groups are an excellent place to start.
    MAGNIFYING GLASS

  13. Fun and Learning.  It really can be a fun shopping experience – you get to meet the artist and find out about their skills, how they make their work, the huge time and effort that goes into a single piece. So take time to visit your local artist’s studio or Gallery, or local craft show. It can be great fun.
    SILK & RAYON FRINGED SCARF

  14. Supporting your local community. A locally handmade gift reflects the community and region in which it was made. It has greater relevance for the person who purchased it or the person to whom the gift is given.
